Towards an ecosystem-based legal framework for the Baltic Sea

 7 October, 09:00-17:00 at Juristernas hus, Stockholm University (Frescativägen 16)

Stockholm Environmental Law and Policy Centre (SELPC) and Baltic Ecosystem Adaptive Management (BEAM) are hosting a transdisciplinary conference with special participation by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (HaV).


The conference will cover state-of-the-art research and management regarding a legal framework for ecosystembased management of the Baltic Sea.

Topics and issues covered:

• International, EU and national law are critical for the status of the Baltic Sea environment.
• Can ecological wisdom be transformed into legal frameworks? If so, how?
• Do the Baltic Sea Convention (with HELCOM) and the EU Maritime Strategies Directive provide adequate bases for effective ecosystem-based management?
• Do the Baltic Sea states implement ecosystem-based management approaches to that end?
• Can new legal approaches, including emission trading schemes, be applied to improve the environmental status of the Baltic Sea?

Corporate responsibility for environmental harm in transboundary contexts

Seminar on November 21st at Folkuniversitetet (the Aula), Kungstensgatan 45, Stockholm

Stockholm Environmental Law and Policy Centre is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with a seminar on legal issues relating to responsibility for environmental nuisance, damage or risks caused by corporations and corporate groups in transboundary contexts. Particular focus is given to the prospect of making companies responsibility in their home country for harms or risks caused abroad, either by the company itself or by its subsidiaries, subunits, suppliers, or even subcontractors. This includes damage both due to normal operations of a corporation and accidents.

Legal protection of forests and biological diversity: Myth or reality?

Stockholm Environmental law and Policy Centre arranges a seminar on legal protection of forests and biodiversity on 11 March 2013, at Juristernas Hus, Stockholm University. The seminar is conducted in Swedish.

The seminar will address the following topical issues:
• How effective is the protection of biodiversity provided by the Swedish Forestry Act?
• Are the measures taken by the Swedish Forestry Agency adequate to protect the biodiversity of forests?

 Bo Kjellén honarary doctor at Faculty of Law 2011


The Faculty of Law has decided to make Bo Kjellén an honorary doctor of 2011.Bo Kjellén is a former Swedish ambassador. He was for many years head of the Swedish delegation in the global climate change negotiations. He chaired parts of the negotiations of the UN Climate Change Convention, which was adopted at the 1992 UN Summit on Environment and Development, and he also chaired the negotiations of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, adopted in 1994. Bo Kjellén remains engaged as writer and lecturer in international environmental matters, not only related to climate change, and he has actively supported teaching and research in environmental law at Stockholm University.
