Assignments
All participants in the course will be required to present a written assignment in English (12 pages) and act as an opponent on a memorandum at one seminar. The seminar paper will give the students 0-2 points and the opposition will give the students 0-1 pionts. These extra points will be added to the points received on the final written examination (under the circumstance that the students have reached the limit for a passed exam).
Guidelines to academic seminar assignments
The participants in the course are required to actively take part in the seminar sessions, which will be held after the conclusion of the lectures in the main course. All participants will be given a written assignment, which will be based upon one of the areas covered during the course of the lectures. All such assignments shall be type-written and handed in individually. The underlying objective of the seminars is to encourage and develop the individual skills of participants to do independent and critical research and to further generate self confidence to present such research orally during the course of the seminar sessions.
In pursuance of these objectives, the participants shall during a given seminar make an oral presentation of the assignment and its duration shall range from 10 to 15 minutes. The participants will also be required to orally "oppose" or discuss someone else's assignment, by raising questions about the material presented or adding relevant information. This process is known as the "opposition" procedure in Swedish legal education but it corresponds to the role of discussant in professional legal education and professional life throughout Europe. Such "opposition" shall also take approx. 10-15 minutes. The assignment discussed will cover a different topic than the one that has been written by the discussant.
The written and oral presentation of the assignment, depending on the preparation, structure, analysis and clarity, will result in points ranging from 0 to 2 points. The points for acting as an opponent will range from 0 to 1 points. All such points shall be added to your result in the final written examination.
These points can either strengthen your existing grade or at the margins lift you a grade. This indicates that we take the oral presentation and opposition process to be a serious component of the overall assignment exercise.
The assignments will be published on this website in early December and a deadline will be fixed to hand in your assignments. A copy of the assignment should be sent via email to the course director, seminar leader, course administrator and opponent respectively.
You are welcome to correspond with your respective teachers during the assignments.
Both footnotes and separate bibliography are expected. Furthermore, the assignment should be written in 1½ spaced; font Times New Roman, size 12; and 2,5 cm margins. The page number limits are 12 pages + separate bibliography.
Please note that you hand in your assingment via e-mail by sending an e-mail to the seminar teacher as well as the course administrator.
Group seminars
The participants of the course will be asked to submit shorter papers for the group seminars, in order to deepen the knowledge about the area covered. Subjects and group seminar assignments will be posted on the webpage.
The group seminar assignment should be written in 1½ spaced; font Times New Roman, size 12; and 2,5 cm margins. The page number limits are 2 pages per group seminar.
