Legal documents contain a high amount of argumentation. This argumentation shows the reasoning process done by the judge or court to decide the case. Currently, this information is neglected in legal search technologies, which focus on keywords, articles or court types. The automatic detection of the argumentation, i.e. argumentative sections and interactions between them, could open new retrieval options. But can we automatically detect argumentation? This session will show some research done in automatic argumentation detection and the challenges involved in the task. I will also present some examples of automatically extracted argumentation from legal cases of the European Court of Human Rights.
